The first thing to do is set the foreground and background colors in the toolbar as it uses that for its color. Select a layer and run it via the filter gallery. Select the size and contrast and another pattern type such as circles, dots and lines. Set the contrast to 0 to make a very low contrast outcome. Reduce the size to 1 or 2 to make very fine dots or lines depending on the image. Select the circles option to make circular designs however you cannot control where the circle origin is, it is in the center of the image. Or use the line option but sadly the lines only go in one direction, horizontally
The tool only applies horizontally so to apply multiple lines at different angles, rotate the design and then apply it and then rotate back again. This is not an ideal workaround. You can also layers to make line combos. You can rotate (to a reasonable degree) the layers to any angle and then apply the horizontal line and then rotate the layer back to where the image etc overlaps with the lower layers, and then use blending modes to combine the layers. All this can be saved to an action via the action panel (make layers, transform layers, apply etc)
You can use the filter multiple times on the same image with different settings as well as different foreground and background but the end result will always end up with the last used color scheme. You can get around this by using layers such as generating multiple copies of the image and then use blending modes to blend all the circle layers. Make three or four duplicate layers and then go to each layer and set the foreground and background color and then apply it to the layer and set the circle size to a different value for each. Once you have applied it to all the layers, go to the layers panel and change the blending mode for each layer so you can see it throughout the image. You can also record all of this as an action.
You can use it on the entire layer, you can also use it with a selection. If you are using the circle option, this gets over the limitation of the center always been the center of the image. You can always move the selection as well as either leave the same foreground / background color or move the selection and change the colors to develop an abstract colorful circle design in different colors. The same can be done with the lines etc, perhaps use a vertical rectangular selection and apply the filter with one set of colors and then move the selection and repeat with a different set
You can apply all kinds of gradients using the gradient tool, perhaps with the colors set to black and white (or yellow or green) to bring forth an op art like design. You can see the lines vary depend on the underlying gradient. Use the twirl or displace to distort the lines or a bas relief or glass effect or use them multiple times to make an unusual combination of lines or plaster and all of this can all be recorded via the actions panel. So all the steps can be quickly re-applied to any other image.
Once you have applied it, you can always go to the edit menu and fade the result using the opacity as well as blending modes. You can fade it to 0% or have the full on response. You can also use this to combine blending modes for all kinds of combinations of original image / lines / circles etc.
There is no feature for a grid but there is a workaround. Open an image and then go to the background and foreground and set them to black and white. Go to the layer menu and duplicate the layer and rotate by 90 degrees and go to the filter gallery and apply it using the lines type. Apply this and then go to the lower layer and apply the same settings (or go to the filter and use different settings) to that layer and then rotate the top layer back by 90 degrees and then go to the layers panel and the blending modes and set to darken or multiply and then layer menu and flatten
Apply some black text to the art board such as 'some text' and flatten via the layer menu. Go to the blurs and apply the motion blur and set it to angle of 0 and distance of 20 or so. Set the foreground to black and background to white. Go to the gallery and apply it with size of 6 and high contrast and also pattern type of line. This will result in a high contrast distorted type from any characters added to the art board. Go to the edit menu and fade and select difference and opacity 100%. If you apply the gallery multiple times, the text will become alien like text and eventually will just vanish into fragments.
Apply using the gallery in black and white or any other color combination and use the lines type and set the contrast high. Set the number to 6 etc and apply. Go to the distort category and wave and number of generators set to 1 and wrap around and the wave length set to 10 / 98 and amplitude set to 5 / 37 and scale 100% and sine. You will end up a lovely set of wavy lines. You may like to crop the top and bottom to remove the imperfections of the wrap around though. Apply it the wave again and the the design will start to break apart but it is still useful for a fascinating background.
