Graphics designs: use in Photoshop and PSP (PDF designs)
How to use PDF designs (vector layers), placing them, opening the designs and using the designs in Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro. Transforming the designs, using layers blending modes, changing colors of designs and more, Examples are from graphics pack 44 (Butterflies designs) from graphicxtras.com. Screenshots are shown with the kind permission of Adobe Systems Incorporated and Corel Corporation. Watch the video on Youtube.
Opening the PDF files in Photoshop (or elements)
On selecting the file via the Photoshop file > open command (select the PDF format files) you will be greeted with the import PDF dialog. The size, resolution etc can then be set. You can set the size to virtually anything, you can set the color mode and bit depth to 8bit or 16bit if required. Once opened, the design can have effects applied, re-colored etc as you would any design
Placing Photoshop PDF files (or EPS)
You can also place the design (or import) and use as a smart layer. Select the PDF command via the file > place command in Photoshop. The import menu is slightly different to the open (but basically much the same) The PDF file will be added to the current document and can be re-sized there. As it is a smart layer, you can re-size etc at any time and also apply smart filters to the design. Screenshots are shown with kind permission of Corel Corporation, Adobe Systems Incorporated and Quark.
PDF Designs (or EPS)
Much the same as loading JPGs or PNG files, PDF files can be used in many different applications. One great feature about the PDFs though: they are vector designs and can be used to any size so you can use them at 72dpi or 300dpi or 600dpi, 5000 x 5000 or 10000 x 10000. The set also includes the designs in EPS and you will find more applications (such as Fireworks, Flash etc support the EPS designs)
Layers
Use the designs as layers (but you can use them as a open file if you wish). You can apply effects to the layer vector designs, you can apply layer effects, you can transform them and much more. Also, for most features of Photoshop the PDF designs can be used as smart layers and smart effects can be applied to them, you can always modify the design at a later point in the creative process with minimal impact.
Export PDF (or eps) format - use in countless applications
You can export the vector designs to other applications as well, you can just save them as JPG or GIF or PNG and export or save. Save to Flash SWF format or SVG. You can also browse the PDF files in many organizer or bridge or explorer tools.
Brushes
You can use them as a source for new brushes designs in Photoshop, you can use the PDF (or EPS) layers as a source for patterns and other designs. The designs can then be stored in ABR or PAT (patterns) files for future use. You can also use the PNG files as a source of Paint Shop Pro brushes (though you may need to re-size the designs to less than 500 x 500 to load them as brushes). Use them in other applications as brush strokes as well
Illustrator symbols
You can use the PDF designs as Illustrator symbols, Illustrator brushes, swatches and more. The PDF designs are an infinite resource toolkit of designs.
1) File > Open (an error may occur on the opening of some of the files especially those with gradients, the files are not stored with editing capability. The error occurs with versions such as CS2 but not with Illustrator CS4)
2) Select PDF
3) Move and re-scale etc as required
The set also contains the designs already stored in AI symbols format - access via the symbols palette in Illustrator
Using the files in Apple Pages ® OS X
Use the choose option to insert the PDF (or EPS) design. As the designs are vectors, the zoom can be set to the maximum without any issues. Once you have accessed the PDF, you can set graphic settings such as shadow, stroke (adding a frame etc), opacity via the 'inspector' (as well as metrics settings such as rotation and size). You cannot change the color etc via the 'adjust image' - the PDF is not an image and though it displays the adjust image dialog, the sliders are not accessible with Pages (as of Pages 09). The PDF is a useful way of adding vector designs to pages document as I have found that some font designs fail to export to PDF (via the export command), the PDF is a useful way around this issue (this export issue may be only for my pages application and you may have more joy with the export / printing of documents via PDF)
1) Open page document or file > new (or new from template chooser)
2) Insert menu > choose
3) Select PDF file via the displayed insert 'finder'
4) Click insert
5) Set size via the size / edit mask dialog
6) Position design as required
Access in Paint Shop Pro® or now, PaintShop Photo Pro (EPS might be even more useful)
1) File > Open
2) Enter resolution (300 DPI?)
3) Enter image type RGB
4) Bounding box
5) Click OK
6) Use image
Use the EPS files for PSP (unless you want to open all the PDF files in one go)
