Scribbles / sketch and re-scaling scribble graphic styles in Illustrator ®

If you purchase the graphic styles set 'scribbles', the scribble styles depend on the size of the path. So if you apply the scribble / scratch graphic style to a small path (100 x 100 px) the result will be odd in comparison with the same style applied to a 2500 x 2500 px path.

Example below shows one of the scribble / sketch styles applied to a path sized 201 x 201 px. The scribble is fairly loose. You can change the sketch style via the appearance palette if you wish, click on the scribble / sketch style and re-size the curve etc. If you don' t want to do that, this is another fairly quick way of re-scaling / sizing the style

The same style but now applied to a path 55 x 55 px, not much of a scribble at all.

Now, re-size the path to 1038 x 1038 px and you will see a lot more of the sketch

Re-size to over 2000 x 2000, even more of the sketch can be seen

To re-size this now would again reduce the style, so expand the appearance. Go to the object menu and expand appearance

As the scribble style is a stroke, re-sizing the path will now result in the stroke / line increasing as you decrease the size of the path. You may wish this to be the case. If not, you can expand the stroke via the object > expand command. Expand to create a filled object with no stroke.

No re-sizing will no change the general appearance or stroke size and the path can be reduce to 200 x 200 px etc and still retain the general appearance of the 'expected' graphic style

Also, you can now apply a fill to the path, changing the scribble / sketch to red etc

You can also then apply a new scribble / sketch style to the existing sketched fill path.

Styles such as scribbles can be merged or combined. Select two or more styles in the styles palette and then use the palette right menu to merge graphic styles into a new style.

The scribble and sketch styles can be modified at any point via the appearance palette (before expanding the appearance though). You can change the line options, stroke width, variation, curviness, spacing etc of the sketch style

Illustrator does not expose the graphic style's scale factor (either via the palette or dialog or scripting). The only way, I can find, to change the scale is via plugin as the graphic styles / appearance suites expose the scale factor. The vector wand plug-in from graphicxtras.com includes an option to modify the scale factor, either randomly or to a new value or to add to the existing value. The scale factor applies to some (but not all) of the settings and can re-size the width of the lines in the sketch / scribble.
